COLLEGE ACCESS FOUNDATION OF CALIFORNIA ANNOUNCES
NEW BOARD CHAIR
SAN FRANCISCO, CA – February 12, 2008 – The Board of Directors of College Access Foundation of California has elected James E. Canales Chairman of the Board. Mr. Canales succeeds Author E. Hughes, who stepped down after three years at the helm. Dr. Hughes had served as chairman since the foundation’s inception and will continue to be a valued member of the board.
Canales is president and chief executive officer of The James Irvine Foundation. He joined the board of College Access Foundation in November 2005.
“I am delighted that Jim will lead the board’s efforts to set the Foundation’s course,” Caroline O. Boitano, president, said. “His depth of experience and knowledge in grantmaking and education will be enormously helpful as the Foundation defines its priorities and refines its strategy.”
“Art Hughes has inspired the board and staff with his commitment to helping students who have financial need attend college,” added Boitano. “Art’s vision has helped shape our mission and guide our work for the past three years, and we look forward to his continued guidance.”
Canales currently serves on the board of trustees of Stanford University and the Monterey Bay Aquarium. His professional affiliations include current service on Independent Sector’s Building Value Together Steering Committee and membership on the Management Committee for Southern California Grantmakers in Los Angeles. He is a cofounder and past Chairman of Grantmakers for Effective Organizations (GEO), a philanthropic affinity group concerned with maximizing philanthropy’s impact by advancing the effectiveness of grantmakers and their grantees.
