COLLEGE ACCESS FOUNDATION OF CALIFORNIA ANNOUNCES MORE THAN $4.1 MILLION IN COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP GRANTS, ITS LARGEST TOTAL TO DATE
SAN FRANCISCO, CA – February 12, 2008 – College Access Foundation of California has approved scholarship grants totaling $4,113,144 to 28 outstanding community- and school-based programs across the state that provide academic support, mentoring and college advising to low-income and first-generation college-going students.
College Access Foundation president Caroline O. Boitano announced that these grants will fund one-year to four-year college scholarships for more than 1,370 students in the Los Angeles, Bay Area, San Joaquin Valley, North and Central Coast, and Inland Empire regions. The foundation awards grants to effective college preparation programs, which use the funds to offer college scholarships to the students they serve. A list of grant recipients is below; more information about the organizations and their work is available at www.collegeaccessfoundation.org.
“We are thrilled to support these extraordinary organizations, whose work is making a real difference in the lives and futures of California’s students,” said Boitano. “They are building a stronger California with every student they reach.”
College Access Foundation recognizes that financial aid is crucial for low-income students, but scholarships alone are not enough to guarantee success at the college level. The academic and social support provided by the Foundation’s grantees ensures that students enter college armed with the knowledge and skills they need to accomplish their educational goals.
“For many low-income and first generation students, college is hard to reach – but it’s even harder for those students to succeed once they enroll,” added Jay Sherwin, vice president for programs. “With the financial aid College Access Foundation provides, and the training and encouragement our grantee programs provide, students are much more likely to persist and graduate.”
