COLLEGE ACCESS FOUNDATION OF CALIFORNIA ANNOUNCES $3.2 MILLION
IN SCHOLARSHIP GRANTS TO COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS STATEWIDE
SAN FRANCISCO, CA – February 27, 2009 – The Board of Directors of College Access Foundation of California has approved the foundation’s first set of scholarship grants for 2009. These grants, totaling $3,171,800, were awarded to 18 community-based and school-based programs that provide academic support, mentoring and college advising services to first-generation college-going students. Fourteen of the grants will aid students from the Bay Area and Los Angeles County; the other four grants will support college scholarships for students from the under-served Inland Empire, North State and North San Joaquin Valley regions.
College Access Foundation grantees use their grant funds to offer college scholarships to the students they serve. Students receive one-year to four-year scholarships to attend the college of their choice. A list of grant recipients is below; more information about the organizations and their work is available at www.collegeaccessfoundation.org.
“College Access Foundation sees scholarship giving as a strategic enterprise,” said Julia I. Lopez, president and CEO. “By attaching our financial aid to highly effective college advising and academic support programs, we believe the students who receive our funds are more likely to persist and graduate – and that’s the bottom line.”
“With adequate support and encouragement, students who otherwise might not dream of going to college are enrolling and succeeding,” added Jay Sherwin, vice president for programs. “We are proud to support these outstanding programs and the promising students they serve every day.”
