COLLEGE ACCESS FOUNDATION OF CALIFORNIA WELCOMES
NEW VICE PRESIDENT FOR PROGRAMS

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – April 26, 2007 – College Access Foundation of California is pleased to announce that Jay S. Sherwin, J.D. has joined its staff as Vice President for Programs. Mr. Sherwin brings to the Foundation more than fifteen years of experience in designing, managing and evaluating grantmaking programs for national, regional and community foundations. In this new position, he will be responsible for the development and execution of the Foundation’s program activites.

“We are thrilled to have Jay joining our team at College Access Foundation,” said Caroline O. Boitano, Foundation president. “His knowledge and experience with a wide variety of grant programs – and his expertise on issues related to educational opportunity for disadvantaged youth – will ensure that our giving is as meaningful and impactful as possible.”

Mr. Sherwin began his career in the office of Congressman Howard Wolpe (D-Mich.), whom he advised in issue areas including education, social services, civil rights and foreign policy. Following that, he was the founding Program Director for the Jewish Fund for Justice, where he managed a national grantmaking program supporting innovative, community-based efforts to combat poverty and promote social justice. After earning a law degree, he represented the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Social Services in child protection cases.

In the 1990s, Mr. Sherwin was a Program Officer for the Greater Worcester Community Foundation, where he managed a competitive grants program benefiting residents of Central Massachusetts.  During that time, he co-founded ProNet, a Council on Foundations affinity group for community foundation program staff members.  For the past seven years, he served as a Senior Program Officer at the Nellie Mae Education Foundation, where he directed a multi-year grantmaking initiative to improve academic achievement, increase college access and support college success for low-income and minority students in New England.

Mr. Sherwin received his B.A. in Political Science from the University of Pennsylvania and his J.D. from Northeastern University School of Law.  He is a member of the Grantmakers for Education board of directors and serves on that board’s Executive Committee.

With the addition of Mr. Sherwin, College Access Foundation is poised to develop its place-based outreach establishing grantees in all geographic regions of the state so that all of California’s students, regardless of location and exposure, can be supported in their dreams of higher education.
