COLLEGE ACCESS FOUNDATION OF CALIFORNIA ANNOUNCES MORE THAN $3.2 MILLION IN COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP GRANTS
SAN FRANCISCO, CA – August 21, 2008 – College Access Foundation of California has approved scholarship grants totaling $3,282,675 to 17 outstanding community- and school-based programs across the state that provide academic support, mentoring and college advising to low-income and first-generation college-going students. The programs use the grant funds to offer college scholarships to the students they serve. Students receive one-year to four-year scholarships to attend the college of their choice.
The 17 grants include renewal awards to five previously-funded programs and twelve first-time grants to effective college advising and academic preparation statewide. The scholarships will support students in every region of California, from Shasta County to the Inland Empire. A list of grant recipients is below; more information about the organizations and their work is available at www.collegeaccessfoundation.org.
“More than 875 California students with financial need will receive scholarships to help ease the burden of paying for college,” said College Access Foundation president and CEO Caroline O. Boitano. “We are proud to help these students pursue higher education, and we recognize that the most effective way to do that is by partnering with local programs that prepare students to reach college and succeed there.”
”Financial aid is crucial for low-income students, but scholarships alone won’t guarantee success at the college level,” added Jay Sherwin, vice president for programs. “Our grantee programs offer the advice and support students need to make good college choices and to thrive academically. The encouragement they provide makes a real difference for these young people.”
